This handcrafted baroque violin is inspired by the early Klingenthal tradition and the work of the Hopf family, one of the most influential violin-making families of Saxony. The instrument embodies the direct, clear, and characterful sound associated with the German baroque violin, combined with an uncompromising dedication to traditional craftsmanship.

Historical foundation – the Klingenthal school

This model draws from early 18th-century violin making in Klingenthal (Saxony, Germany), where the tradition was shaped in part by Kaspar Hopf and his family.

The Hopf family played a significant role in the region’s development, both economically and artisanally, and established a recognizable German style: functional, direct, and focused on projection.

Rather than copying a single instrument, this violin is an interpretation of the early Hopf style, grounded in historical principles while allowing room for refinement.

Construction and build

This violin is entirely handmade using traditional baroque techniques, without modern shortcuts.

  • Nailed neck (authentic baroque construction, not a reconstruction)
  • String length: 324 mm
  • Back length: 350 mm
  • Width: 230 mm
  • Weight: approx. 320 grams

Fingerboard and neck

The short fingerboard is made from spruce veneered with maple, contributing to:

  • reduced weight
  • increased resonance
  • a responsive playing feel

The fingerboard inlay is inspired by Amati examples, adding a subtle historical reference.

Pegs

The tuning pegs are fully handcrafted by Elise from French boxwood, based on an original design, enhancing both the aesthetic and functional integrity of the instrument.

Varnish and finish

The violin is finished with an amber oil varnish (fossil resin) in a blonde color.

This varnish:

  • enhances the natural character of the wood
  • supports resonance
  • reflects historical baroque finishing practices

Setup and sound

  • Strings: plain gut (unsplit lamb)
  • Bridge: Stradivari style

Sound character

The instrument offers a distinctive and projecting voice:

  • resonant
